What is the classification and intended use for Vogmask?

Vogmask is designed as Filtering half masks to protect against particles.

Our product is Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Certified KF-94, GB2626-2006 Personal Protective Equipment Certified KN95, and in assessment for CE Mark Personal Protective Equipment – filtering half masks for particles, against EN 149:2001 + A1:2009 for EU market.  Vogmask conforms to NIOSH N99 filter efficiency as stated in 42 CFR Part 84.181.

Vogmask is NOT classified as Masks to prevent disease – Regulated under CDRH/FDA as Class II medical devices subject to premarket notification 510(k), classified as surgical mask 21 CFR 878.4040. Surgical masks are not PPE, they protect the patient and the surgical area from contamination. Surgical masks prevent droplets being expelled into the environment by the wearer and protect patients in surgery from these being transferred to the operative site.

What does Vogmask protects from?

VOGMASK is used for protection from airborne particles such as PM 0.3, PM 2.5, PM 10, dust, allergens, post combustion particles, germs, shavings, biologics, odours, scents, mould, mould spores, particles in wildfire smoke, volcanic particulate pollution and other airborne contaminants. The benefits of particular respirators are confirmed by leading health providers worldwide. Highly efficient filtering masks help protect the mask wearer from particles as small as .254 microns.

What are Vogmasks made of?

Raw materials: Organic cotton or microfiber outer and inner layer, microfiber particle filter, coconut shell derived carbon ash bonded to textile, latex free spandex trim and ear loops, aluminium noseband, ABS Resin exhale valve base and cover with silicone stopper.

MATERIAL DATA SAFETY SHEETS have established material components as safe for respirators.

There is NO LATEX in the manufacturing of Vogmask.

Vogmask is printed with safe for respirator inks and dyes.

NOTE: The disk of the side of the mask is a one way exhalation valve to facilitate exit of CO2 and moisture from interior of the mask, adding to comfort while wearing the mask.

What size should I order?

Weight based Size Recommendations:

What should I do if the ear loops tug on my ears and bend my ears forward?

Try stretching the ear loops to maximum length two or three times, and then try the mask on again for size and comfort. If this does not work, contact us for replacement size procedure.

What if the face blank does not extend beneath my chin?

Once you position the side up with the aluminium noseband formed over the bridge of your nose, a properly fitting mask should reach below your chin. If it does not comfortably reach below your chin, the mask is too small to get a good seal. Try first positioning the noseband lower on your nose bridge. If that does not work, please contact us for the next size larger.

What should I do if the mask fogs my glasses?

Follow fitting instructions carefully. Make sure the side up is the side with the noseband for forming over the bridge of the nose. Form the aluminium noseband carefully on the gaps between the nose bridge and the cheeks. Your exhale should exit the mask through the exhalation valve and not out the gaps between the cheeks and nose bridge.

What is the useful life of Vogmask?

The mask can be worn for 4 – 5 months depending on the average air quality and the frequency of using the mask. The useful life depends on the environmental conditions the mask in which the mask is worn. The mask may be reused until the Use by Date marked on the packaging. The obsolescence date is three (3) years from the date of manufacture.

Vogmask is certified as a reusable mask product. Once the middle layer particle filtering textile is clogged with microscopic particles, there is an increase in breathing resistance and the mask should be replaced.

If any part or assembly of the mask is damaged, or if a good seal is not achievable, discard the mask.

Where is the filter and can it be replaced?

The particle filtering textile and the carbon filter are sewn into the middle layers of the mask and are the same dimension as the outer face blank. The filter is not replaceable. After the useful life of the mask, the entire mask has to be replaced.

What is the disk on the side of the mask?

The disk on the side of the mask is a one-way exhalation valve designed to add comfort to the wearer by the free exit of moisture and CO2 of the exhale. Valved respirators protect the wearer from airborne hazardous contaminants. The one way exhalation valve is a simple ABS Resin valve with a silicone stopper to allow the exit of moisture and CO2 from exhale. Depending on the ambient temperature the mask is worn in, there is always some breathing resistance in a mask, and moisture build-up, but our product is certified for product safety and rated highly on comfort in comparison to paper disposable masks. The valve undergoes several quality checkpoints in the manufacturing process from sampling of raw materials to three visual and leakage tests before the individual mask is approved to be packaged and exported.

It is highly unlikely that the valve stopper is not functioning properly as the exhale opens the stopper and the inhale closes it (to prevent inward leakage).

As is indicated in the User Instructions, the valve can be checked by blowing on it from the inside of the mask to make sure the air exits through the valve. If it does, this is the proper functioning of the valve. If it doesn’t, the mask should be discarded and replaced.

Does the exhalation valve filter the exhalation of the wearer?

No, the exhalation valve is made of three parts: a valve base, a silicone membrane (stopper), and a valve cover. The silicone stopper opens with the pressure of exhalation, and returns to closed position to prevent inward leakage. Valved respirators do not protect others from the wearer’s exhalation.  For mask use where protection from the wearer’s exhale and from inhaled particles, choose a mask without an exhalation valve.

What about the filter-layers?

There are two filter layers sewn into the middle layers of the mask. One is 99% efficient for particles over .3 microns, the other is a carbon bonded to textile for deodorization.

Is there latex in the spandex trim and ear loops?

There is NO latex in the spandex trim and ear loops.

Can the valve be taken off for washing?

No, the valve is permanently heat sealed to the mask. It is fine to get it wet. This will clear it of microscopic dust and particles. If the valve on your mask falls apart, do not use the mask. Contact us for a replacement.

What are the maintenance and washing instructions?

Mildly rinse outer and inner layer with water, add a small drop of liquid soap (like dishwashing liquid), rinse again and hang dry. Store in a clean dry place free of dust. Do not store in plastic bag unless fully dried.

Is it normal to feel resistance when inhaling through a mask?

Yes, there is breathing resistance in any high efficiency particle filtering face mask.  For most people, once you are not thinking about it, the resistance is not an issue.  The inhalation resistance on our product is well within the acceptable range specified by NIOSH:

The inhalation resistance criteria as stated in 42 CFR Part 84.180 is an initial inhalation not exceeding 35 mm water column height pressure. The test articles submitted by the sponsor conform to this NIOSH criterion for airflow resistance.

Is the mask also suitable for a baby?


We have prototyped Size XS but as of this date no international regulatory agency will certify masks for under 3 years old. Therefore, we are not able to offer masks for infants and children under 3 years old at this time.

Does the mask filter fragrances, airborne food particles and more for people who are allergic to it?

All of the Certified Reusable Vogmask N99CV Product Family are efficient at filtering airborne contaminants over 0.3 microns, and many people find Vogmask comfortable, well-fitting and efficient. Please note the Material Components in Vogmask N99CV:

Outer Face blank (polyester microfiber)

N99 Filter (nanofiber meeting technical data and testing for 99% filtering)

The carbon bonded to textile filter layer is for odours. Please take note that the charcoal for this filter layer is derived from burned coconut shells (in case that will cause a problem).

Does wearing a Vogmask protects you from cigarette smoke or gases?

Vogmask protects from some but not all particles in second hand cigarette smoke. Vogmask certified N99 filter filters 99% of airborne particles of MMD (Mass Mean Diameter) 0.3 microns.

No half face piece filtering respirator will protect you from all of the chemicals and gases in second hand smoke. You would need a powered respirator for that.

Here is research on MMD (Mass Mean Diameter of particles in cigarette smoke:

The size distribution parameters obtained were similar for all cigarettes tested, with an average CMD of 0.1 micron, a MMD of 0.38 micron, and a GSD of 2.0. The MMD found using the EAA is similar to that previously reported, but the CMD is distinctly smaller and the GSD larger, indicating the presence of many more ultrafine particles. These results may explain the disparity of CMD values found in existing data. Ultrafine particles are of toxicological importance because their respiratory tract deposition is significantly higher than for particles 0.3 to 0.5 micron and because their large surface area facilitates adsorption and delivery of potentially toxic gases to the lung.

Also Vogmask is designed to protect from non-oil airborne contaminants, but does not address the gases associated with second hand smoke. That said, many of our customers can feel immediate benefit from mask use for this purpose.

Vogmask is highly efficient at protecting from many of the particles in smoke. That is why people who wear a mask around cigarette smoke feel the mask is helpful in this environment.

Precautions for use of Vogmask with kids:

  • Size Small Vogmask should be worn only under the supervision of a responsible adult
  • Respirators are not recommended for use by under 3 years of age
  • Supervising adult should check valve function before each use
  • Supervising adult should monitor use of Vogmask in environments of poor air quality for replacement each 3-4 months or when middle layer particle filtering media is saturated as indicated by increased breathing resistance.

Functional description

Respirators are PPE and are designed and used to reduce the potential exposure of the wearer to airborne hazardous contaminants.

The following is a functional description of the Vogmask and its intended use:

  • Particle filtering half mask to reduce exposures to airborne particulate matter
  • Helps to protect from non-oil airborne particles such as dust, pollen, shavings, and particles found in air pollution
  • The mask can also help reduce exposures to airborne biological particles such as mould.
  • Intended for general public use

Certain limitations apply to the use of the Vogmask product:

  • Follow fitting instructions carefully; filtering efficiency depends on proper fitting.
  • Do not use Vogmask for chemicals gases, vapours, oils, aerosols, oil based particles, or extremely high particle concentrations.
  • Do not use in oxygen deficient or explosive atmospheres.
  • Does not eliminate the risk of illness, diseases, or infection.
  • Leakage will occur if facial hair passes under the face seal.
  • This product does not guarantee protection from illness or any harmful substance.
  • This product does not filter gases and particles <0.3 micrometre found in air pollution.

Will a valved respirator help to protect me from airborne micro-organisms?

Both valved and un-valved disposable respirators are tested under the standard EN149:2001.

A valved or un-valved respirator of the same class (EN 149:2001 FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3) will offer the same level of protection to the wearer.

No respirator is 100% efficient, as there will be leakage around the face seal, around the valve (if applicable) and through filter penetration.

Both valved and un-valved respirators are designed to help reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles.

Vogmask provides important tools to protect respiratory health and inspire the conversation about poor air quality. Wearing a beautiful and highly efficient, well-fitting and comfortable mask serves two important purpose:

  • Protection from inhaled airborne contaminants
  • Making people aware of the urgent need for cleaning up the air we breathe

Intended use

Vogmask is for general use to protect from inhaled particles such as PM 2.5, pollen, dust, and other airborne contaminants. The carbon filter layer provides deodorization.

– We have become an Approved Vendor for Mayo Clinic and several children’s hospitals. The masks are offered to hospital patients when they leave the hospital to protect the patients from airborne contaminants following treatment. The masks are not germ or surgical masks for infection control. The presence of the exhale valve means that the exhalation of the wearer is not filtered, and so the mask only protects the mask wearer from inhaled contaminants. That said, many people with respiratory conditions love to wear Vogmask so they can protect their lungs. This is why the hospital channels have made the masks available to their clients. –
